Pioneers fall to #1 Bears

It took number one to give UW-Platteville loss number one.

Top-ranked Washington U. beat the Pioneers 87-76 Sunday in the Webster/Wash U. Invitational in St. Louis.

The Pioneers suffered their first loss of the season after three wins, while the Bears rebounded from their 66-60 loss to fifth-ranked Augustana Saturday to improve to 3-2.

The Bears, who were third in the NCAA III tournament last season, led 35-30 at the half. The Pioneers made 70 percent of their shots (19-27) in the second period, but the Bears made 11 of 18 (61 percent) from the field and also held a huge advantage at the line. Wash U. made 27 of 33 free throws, while UW-Platteville was just 5 of 8.

Jeff Skemp led the Pioneers with 23 points, hitting 11 of 12 from the field. Mike Shaw had 13 point, and Nick Allen scored 12. Josh Langenfeld had six assists, while Kyle Tetschlag made four steals.

Tyler Nading scored a career-high 31 points and tied the Wash. U. single-game record with seven steals, Troy Ruths and Aaron Thompson each scored 16, with Thompson making 13 of 15 from the line.

UWP opens Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday vs. UW-Superior at approximately 3 p.m. on Bo Ryan Court. The women play at 1 p.m., and the men's game will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of that contest.
