Pioneers upset No. 12 Titans

Visiting UW-Platteville beat #12 UW-Oshkosh 72-53 Wednesday and in the process gained a share of first place in the young Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season.


Both the Pioneers, who received votes in this week's D3hoops.com poll, and the Titans are 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the WIAC. UW-Whitewater, a 65-62 winner at UW-La Crosse, also has a 4-1 league mark.


UWP closed the game with a 25-6 run, pulling away from a 47-47 tie. Back-to-back layups by Jeff Skemp gave the Pioneers the lead for good.


Skemp had 18 points and 10 rebounds, his third straight double-double of the season, while Mike Shaw had 16 points and Oshkosh native Charlie Lohoff added 12 points. Shaw scored 13 in the final 5:55, helping the Pioneers score the game's last 10 points.


Matt Miller led the Titans with 17 points, all in the final 14:50, while Dane Secker Anderson had 12.


The Pioneers shot better than 50 percent for the sixth straight game, finishing at 57.8 percent. They were 14-21 in the final period, for 67 percent. UWP also committed just five turnovers in 40 minutes.


The competition stays intense for the Pioneers, as they play at #14 UW-Stevens Point Saturday at 5 p.m. for their fifth straight road contest. The 10-3 Pointers buried UW-River Falls 87-44 Wednesday night. UWP finally plays a home game again Wednesday against UW-La Crosse at 7 p.m.
