Pioneers hold off Falcons

UW-Platteville held off a late UW-River Falls charge to beat the Falcons 65-61 Saturday afternoon on the Pioneers' Bo Ryan Court.

The Pioneers led by as 12 at 54-42 with 10:43 on Mark Gossens' three-point basket. The Falcons went on a 9-0 run, cutting the deficit to 54-51 before Charlie Lohoff answered with another three-point shot.

The Pioneers held the slim lead all the way to the end. UWRF's Jontaie Koonkaew made a three-point shot with 37 seconds left, bringing the Falcons within 62-61, but Lohoff made 1-2 free throws with 10 seconds remaining for a two-point advantage. Koonkaew missed a driving layup in the closing seconds, and Bo Richter rebounded, was fouled and sank two free throws with 1.3 seconds.

UWP improved to 12-8 overall and 7-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Falcons fell to 9-13, 4-9.

Gossens led all scorers with 19 points, while Lohoff added 16. Nate Robertson paced the Falcons with 13 points, while Erik Olson had 10 and Koonkaew 10.

The Falcons made 11 of their first 16 shots, but the Pioneer defense held them without a field goal in the final 7:48 of the first half to take a 39-33 lead.

The Pioneers knocked down 11 of 22 three-point attempts, with Lohoff and Gossens both hitting 3-4. Mike Shaw also drained three long-range shots.
