Pioneers earn road victory

Curt Hanson and Kyle Tetschlag came off the bench to combine for 23 points, helping UW-Platteville to a 70-66 win at UW-River Falls Saturday afternoon.
Hanson scored 12 points, while Tetschlag had 11 as the Pioneer bench outscored the Falcon reserves, 31-14. Starting center Jeff Skemp also scored 11 for the Pioneers, who improved to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegaite Athletic Conference.
Nate Robertson had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Falcons (2-5, 1-2), who led 7-0 to begin the game.
The Pioneers tied the game at 11 then led 38-27 at the break. The Falcons came back to tie the score at 43, but Hanson drilled a three-pointer for a 46-43 lead. The Falcons crept back within two in the final minute, but Mark Gossens's jump shot with 20 seconds left gave the Pioneers a 66-62 advantage. Charlie Lohoff made four free throws in the final 12 seconds to seal with win.
UWP takes a break from conference play until the new year. The 15th-ranked Pioneers close 2006 with a non-conference game at Robert Morris-Springfield next Saturday at 5 p.m. and then two games in the Randolph-Macon tournament Dec. 29-30 in Virginia.
