UW-Platteville raced out to a 20-3 lead and went on to beat Buena Vista 78-65 Saturday night in the final game of the Pioneer Tipoff Classic in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Pioneers made seven of their first nine shots in taking that early 17-point lead. UWP, on a Curt Hanson three-point shot with one second left, held a 45-26 halftime advantage. The Pioneers doubled up the Beavers for their largest lead at 62-31 and still led by 20 with two minutes to play. The 13-point final margin was the closest Buena Vista came since the score was 17-3.

The Pioneers improved to 2-0, while the Beavers fell to 1-1 after the battle of two teams that received votes in the D3hoops.com preseason poll.
