Huge comeback falls just short

UW-Platteville shaved all but two points off a 24-point halftime deficit, but its valient comeback effort fell just short in a 66-62 loss at Elmhurst Thursday.

The Bluejays raced out to a 39-15 halftime lead and appeared ready to cruise to an easy win. The Pioneers, however, scored the first nine points of the second half and gradually whittled away at the lead.

The Pioneers cut the lead to 62-60 in the waning seconds, but turned the ball over with 18 seconds remaining. Jay Brizzolara then made two free throws for a four-point lead. UWP's Brad Reitzner scored a layup ith five seconds remaining, cutting the lead to 64-62, but Brizzolara made two more free shots with three seconds left to seal the win for the Bluejays (7-3).

Reitzner pumped in 26 points, while LeVon Crawford had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Pioneers, now 7-4.

UWP gets back into WIAC action Tuesday at UW-Oshkosh and Saturday at UW-Eau Claire. The Pioneers, who have played just three home games so far, then are home for five straight games, beginning Jan. 12 with UW-La Crosse.
