Pioneers sweep Finlandia
WAUPUN, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team defeated Finlandia 16-3 on Sunday to complete the 4-0 sweep of the WIAC opponent.
WAUPUN, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team defeated Finlandia 16-3 in seven innings on Sunday to complete the 4-0 sweep of the WIAC opponent.
The Pioneers improved to 16-17 overall (11-9 WIAC) while the Lions fell to 4-28 overall (1-19 WIAC).
Senior Caleb Kaufmann earned the win and pitched six innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out nine batters. Freshman Rich Jesse Jr. pitched a shutout seventh inning with two strikeouts.
Eight Pioneers contributed to the team's 13 hits which included seven extra-base hits. Junior Josh Moses, senior Brennan Kearney, senior Curtis Barsness and freshman Logan Kozak each went 2-of-3 with multiple runs scored and multiple RBI.
Sophomore Sam Behm and Kozak each doubled in a run in the first and second innings, respectively to go up 2-0. Moses had a solo homerun in the third inning before sophomore Ross Krist drove in his second run of the game to push the lead to 6-0.
The Pioneers exploded with ten runs in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 16-0. The Pioneers drew five base on balls, had one hit by pitch, two singles and three doubles in the inning. Sophomore Jonathan Kelso, Moses and Kearney each doubled in the big inning.
The Pioneers travel to face University of Dubuque on Tuesday, April 30th at 2 and 4 pm.
