STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 18-9 and 8-3 in the Friday night double header at University Field.
In the Pioneers improve to 11-14 overall (6-6 WIAC) while the Pointers drop to 13-13 overall (5-7 WIAC).
The Pioneers had plenty of offense in the 18-9 victory in the opening game of the double header. The Pioneers tallied 14 hits and 10 walks. Five Pioneers had multiple hits in the game. Senior Caleb Kaufmann earned the win and pitched 6.1 innings while allowing six earned runs.
Freshman Logan Kozak hit for the cycle (4-of-5) scored two runs and had three RBI to lead the way offensively. Kozak tripled in the third and doubled in the fifth. both times driving in senior Curtis Barsness. Kozak had a solo home run in the eighth and singled in the ninth to complete the cycle.
Sophomore Jonathan Kelso went 3-of-6 with three RBI and two runs scored. Junior Collin Mormann went 2-of-3 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Senior Mitchell Susa and sophomore Ross Krist each went 2-of-4 and scored three runs and one run, respectively. Freshman Ben Espinoza had four RBI despite going 0-of-3 due to two sacrifice flies and two bases loaded walks.
In the second game of the set, Senior Tyler Vogel started on the mound and earned the win. Vogel threw 6.0 innings and allowing only two earned runs with five strikeouts in the 8-3 win. Senior Scottie Gordon threw the final three innings, allowing one earned run and earning the save.
Susa homered and doubled (2-of-4) to drive in four runs and score two runs to account for six of the eight Pioneer runs. Kelso went 2-of-4 including a triple and scored two runs. Junior Josh Moses went 1-of-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Pioneers will finish the four-game WIAC series on Saturday, April 20 at 12:00 and 3:00 pm at University Field.
