Pioneers continue fall season with a couple rival meetings, golf prepares for WIAC Championship
Platteville, Wis.- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville golf team will travel to Reedsburg, Wisconsin, for the three-day WIAC Golf Championship (presented by Culver’s) starting on Friday, Oct. 8 and finishing on Sunday, Oct. 10. The opening round will be a shot gun start at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday rounds will begin at 8:30 a.m. with groups beginning on holes one and 10.

The Pioneers participated in the Falcon Invite in Prescott, Wisconsin, to tune up for the championship. Senior Markie Ash finished tied for second with a 166. Ash shot an opening 86 on day one and battled back for an 80 on day two.
The Pioneers shot a team total of 725, good for fourth out of seven teams.
Ash leads the WIAC in strokes per 18 holes. She enters the conference championship with a 76.5 stroke average. UW-Whitewater's Ashton Sinak is second, averaging 78 strokes for 18 holes.

Women's soccer splits two games
After ten days off, the Pioneer women's soccer team picked up right where they left off. The Pioneers won a fourth straight match by shut out when they defeated the University of Dubuque on Sept. 29. Freshman Lydia Smith scored her first career goal and junior goalkeeper Emma Ball didn't allow a goal in the Pioneers' 1-0 win.
The Pioneers traveled to UW-Stout to open WIAC play and saw a program best eight game unbeaten streak end in overtime. The Blue Devils opened scoring mid-way through the second half on a penalty kick. Freshman Lauren Lodico tied the game up five minutes later with her third goal of the year. UW-Stout scored late in the first overtime to pick up the win. Junior Emma Ball stopped seven shots.

The Pioneers (6-1-2, 0-1 WIAC) will continue conference play with a pair of games this week. UW-Platteville will welcome rival UW-Whitewater (7-3, 1-0 WIAC) to Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. The Pioneers are scheduled to finish the week with a trip north to face UW-River Falls (5-6-1, 0-2 WIAC) on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m.
The pre-season favorite Warhawks enter the contest with a four-game winning streak. Anna Brodjian is the leading goal scorer in the WIAC. She averages 1.1 goals per contest and has 11 total goals. Leah Eisenbarth is allowing 1.122 goals per contest. Due to WIAC COVID-19 protocols, UW-Whitewater will receive a 1-0 win vs. UW-River Falls. The win is only counted in conference standings, not overall team record.
Ryan Quamme is in his ninth year at UW-Whitewater with a career record of 138-40-13.
The Pioneers will finish off the week at UW-River Falls. The Falcons will face Saint Mary's University in a non-conference match before welcoming the Pioneers to Ramer Soccer Stadium.
Madyson Shew leads the Falcons with nine goals. Alexis Peterson leads the Falcons with five assists and added eight goals of her own for a team leading 21 total points.
Sean McKuras is in his 19th year at UW-River Falls and has a career record of 168-165-30.
Senior Amber Lueder leads the Pioneers with six goals and 12 total points. Freshman Lydia Smith leads the team with four assists. Four freshmen have multiple goals for the year and eight freshmen have scored at least one goal on the season.
Junior goalkeeper Emma Ball has started eight of the nine games and allowed only five goals on the year. Junior goalkeeper Onalee Erickson has played in five games and has yet to allow a goal on 19 shot attempts. The Pioneers have recorded five shutouts on the year.
Sam Koenig is in his first year as director of soccer and has a career record of 6-1-2.
Pioneer cross country gets early look at WIAC Championship and North Regional course
The men's and women's Pioneer cross country teams took part in the Blugold Invite hosted by UW-Eau Claire at Whitetail Golf Club. The women finished 16th and men finished 17th out of 27 teams. The Whitetail Golf Club will host the WIAC Cross Country Championship (presented by Culver's) on Saturday, Oct. 30 and the NCAA North Regional on Saturday, Nov. 13.
Junior Samantha Meyer paced the women with a 57th place finish out of 355. Meyer ran a personal best 24:12.13 in the 6,000-meter race. Sophomore Natalie Kreier (25:27.84) and freshman Allyson Czeshinski (27:27.49) also ran personal best.
Junior Caleb Christiansen finished 54th out of 412 in the men's 8,000-meter race. Christiansen finished in 26:39.42. Sophomore Riley Coulter (27:23.02), senior Troy Humpal (27:37.65) and freshman Xavier Lasee (27:46.13) all ran personal bests.
The Pioneers will travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin, for the Firebird Invite hosted by Carthage College on Friday, Oct. 18. The women's race will start at 4:15 p.m., followed by the men at 5:15 p.m.

Men's soccer hosts a pair of mid-day contests
Similar to what the women's soccer team experienced two weeks ago, the men's soccer team had an unexpected weekend off. The Pioneer's trip to Michigan for a pair of contests was cancelled and the Pioneers were off for the weekend. They did play one mid-week game with Wartburg college that finished in a 1-1 tie. Freshmen John Bochenczak scored the lone goal for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers are scheduled to hold a pair of mid-week mid-afternoon games. Knox College will visit Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. and Concordia Wisconsin will visit on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m.
The Prairie Fire enter the week with a 5-4 record. They are scheduled to play Monmouth College on Tuesday, Oct. 5. Joey Dorgan and Giuseppe Ceschia are tied for the team lead in goals with three.
The Falcons enter the week with a 5-5 record. They will visit the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Wednesday, Oct. 6. Gilberto Gomez leads the Falcons with four goals.
Sophomore Jack Gentilli leads the Pioneers with four goals, five assists and 13 total points. Six freshmen have scored at least one goal on the season. Freshman goalkeeper Chase Werner has started six games and played in seven. He is allowing 0.86 goals per game with one shutout.
Sam Koenig is in his third year at UW-Platteville with a career record of 13-10-5.
Volleyball prepares for pair of matches
The Pioneer volleyball team opened the week with a non-conference contest with Edgewood College. The Eagles won the first two sets before the Pioneers rallied to force a decisive set five. The back and forth deciding fifth set went the Eagles' way. Senior Olive Kudronowicz and Kaite Asche had 13 kills. Asche had seven blocks and Kudronowicz had 18 digs.
The Pioneers returned to WIAC action when they traveled to UW-La Crosse on Oct. 2. The Pioneers dropped the match to the Eagles 3-1. The Eagles won set one, 25-20 before the Pioneers ran away with set two 25-12. Set three was tightly contested and went the Eagles' way 29-27 before putting the Pioneers away in set four 25-13. Seniors Olivia Kudronowicz (13 kills) and Kaite Asche (10 kills) led the Pioneers at the net.

The Pioneers (9-10, 0-3 WIAC) will continue conference play when they travel to UW-Oshkosh (10-8, 0-3 WIAC) on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. Riley Kindt leads the Titans with 189 kills and a .253 hitting percentage. Abby Fregien leads the team with 25 service aces. Kalli Mau leads the Titans with 386 assists.
Jon Ellmann is in his fourth year at UW-Oshkosh and has a career record of 68-48.
The Pioneers will close the week with a non-conference match against Cardinal Stritch on Friday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. The Wolves enter the week with a 9-4 record and will face Olivet Nazarene and Roosevelt University before visiting Williams Fieldhouse.
Sydeny Hoffman leads the Wolves with 115 kills. Nicole Hozzian leads the Wolves with 390 assists.
Freshman Emma Carlson leads the Pioneers with 202 kills. Sophomore Nicki Kammerzelt leads the Pioneers with 208 digs. Junior Sam Rossetti and sophomore Abby Feldmann have been splitting time at setter. Feldmann leads the team with 344 assists, while Rossetti has 294.
Samantha Birkicht is in her fifth year as head volleyball coach at UW-Platteville. She has a career record of 49-61.
Football to play for Miner's Axe in George Chryst Memorial Bowl game
The Pioneer football team will travel to UW-Whitewater on Saturday, Oct. 9 for a 1 p.m. kick off at Perkins Stadium. Warhawks are picked to win the conference and enter the contest with a 4-0 record.
The annual meeting between the conference rivals has been named the George Chryst Memorial Bowl since 1993. The contest honors the late UW-Platteville head football coach George Chryst, who passed away suddenly in 1992 after leading the Pioneers to a 79-60-2 record and the 1980 conference championship. Patty Chryst, George's widow, will award the winning team with the Miner's Axe trophy, while media members will select an offensive and defensive player of the game. This will be the 113th meeting between the two schools and 28th George Chryst Memorial Bowl game.
The Pioneers (1-3, 0-1 WIAC) dropped the conference opener to UW-Oshkosh. The Titans sprinted out to a 21-3 lead after one quarter, before the Pioneers battled back to make it a three-point game late in the game. A final drive was stopped by the Titans' defense to secure the win for UW-Oshkosh.
The Warhawks enter the week as the #4 nationally ranked team by d3football.com. Max Meylor is completing 71.08% of his passes for 916 yards and 12 touchdowns. Tyler Holte and Ryan Wisniewski have four receiving touchdowns. Wisniewski leads the Warhawks with 14 receptions. Alex Peete has rushed for 264 yards and eight touchdowns.
Shane McGrail leads the Warhawk defense with 20 tackles. Mackenzie Balanganayi has had one sack in each contest and leads the Warhawks with four sacks.
Kevin Bullis is in his sixth year at UW-Whitewater with a career record of 60-9.
Senior Colin Schuetz leads the WIAC in passing, averaging 296.8 yards a contest. Schuetz has completed 59.2% of his passes for 1,187 yards and nine touchdowns. Junior wideout Brandt Stare (24) and junior Ben Wilson (23) are Schuetz's main target. Stare leads the Pioneers with three receiving touchdowns.
Junior Tyler Lamer leads the Pioneers with 166 rushing yards. Schuetz and Lamer have two rushing touchdowns apiece.
Junior linebacker leads the Pioneers with 38 total tackles. Junior Justin Blazek leads the Pioneers with 6.5 tackles for loss. Senior Logan Ketelhut leads the Pioneers with 2.5 sacks. Junior defensive back Samuel Tausz has two interceptions and three pass break ups.
Junior placekicker Andrew Schweigert has converted 50% of his field goal attempts, including a school record 50-yard field goal at Franklin. Half of Schweigert's 22 kickoffs have resulted in a touch back.
Mike Emendorfer is in his 23rd year at UW-Platteville with an overall record of 109-107.
