Platteville, Wis.- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team will be hosting its annual "Garding Against Cancer" game when UW-Whitewater visits Bo Ryan Court on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m.
"Garding Against Cancer" was created in memory of Glen Gard, the father of head basketball coach Jeff Gard. Glen passed away in October of 2015 after a six-month battle with brain cancer. Jeff, along with his brother Greg, the head basketball coach at UW-Madison, have raised over $4 million in three years. Through the generosity of donors and friends, "Garding Against Cancer" has seen impact on the fight against cancer in research breakthroughs and advancements in patient care. All funds raised through "Garding Against Cancer" stay in the state of Wisconsin.
During the under 16-minute media time-out of the second half, the Pioneers will pass buckets through the crowd, at this time fans will be able to make a contribution to "Garding Against Cancer." The beneficiaries of the bucket pass will be the UW Carbone Center, the Grant County Cancer Coalition and the Iowa County Cancer Coalition. Glen's wife Connie and sons, Greg, Garry and Jeff started the Iowa County Coalition after Glen's passing. The cancer coalition's focus is on patient care, and funds raised are primarily used to help pay utility bills and provide gas cards to help offset the cost of travel to and from cancer treatments.
