UW-Platteville Athletics - 2002 Top Student-Athletes Honored

UW-Platteville celebrated its annual National Student-Athlete Day on Wednesday in the brand-new Pioneer Student Center.

The athletic department honored those student-athletes in each sport with the highest fall grade-point average. Seventeen of the honored individuals achieved perfect 4.00 g.p.a.s. Each student-athlete invited a faculty or staff member who has been influential on his or her career.

The honored student-athletes (listed by sport with their hometowns, majors, g.p.a. and guest) were:

Baseball: Merrill Brunson, Richland Center, Education, 4.00, Dan Griffiths, tutoring supervisor.

Football: Chris Lee, Darien, Animal Science, 4.00, Robert Nusbaum of department of agriculture and sciences; and Mitch Repka, Holcombe, Mechanical Engineering, 4.00, John Krogman, chair of the general engineering department.

Men's Basketball: Ben Schambow, Platteville, Education, 4.00, Dan Griffiths, tutoring supervisor.

Men's Cross Country & Track and Field: Andy Kahler, Reedsburg, Mechanical Engineering, 4.00, Daryl Logan, mechanical engineering department; Jesse Spankowski, Reedsburg, Engineering, 4.00, Mark Evenson, foreign languages department; Adam Christnovich, Neenah, Industrial Engineering, 4.00, Jim Almquist, general engineering department.

Softball: Karen Schlimgen, Waunakee, Elementary Education, 4.00, Karen Thomas, mathematics department; Beth Shaw, South Milwaukee, Psychology, 4.00, Mark Evenson, foreign languages department.

Trainers: Nicol Donini, Waukesha, Elementary Education, 3.70, Angela Puchalla, assistant trainer.

Volleyball: Kristen Shields, Montfort, Business, 4.00, Jerry Oxenford, of the business administration department;
