Wynsma and Rinehart claim titles as No. 25 Pioneers finish second at Cornell Invite
MT. VERNON, Iowa – The No. 25 nationally ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team tied for second place in the Cliff Keen-Mike Duroe Invitational hosted by Cornell College Saturday. The Pioneers tied with No. 5 Coe College at 141.5 team points while No. 18 UW-La Crosse took first of eight teams with 165.5 points. Freshman Nathan Wynsma and junior Lucius Rinehart garnered titles while three more Pioneers advanced to championship matches.
MT. VERNON, Iowa – The No. 25 nationally ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team tied for second place in the Cliff Keen-Mike Duroe Invitational hosted by Cornell College Saturday. The Pioneers tied with No. 5 Coe College at 141.5 team points while No. 18 UW-La Crosse took first of eight teams with 165.5 points. Freshman Nathan Wynsma and junior Lucius Rinehart garnered titles while three more Pioneers advanced to championship matches.
At 165 pounds, Wynsma racked up three pins and a technical fall to earn first place. The Pioneer pinned his first opponent Garrett Carlson of UW-La Crosse (2:22). Next, the freshman won by a 18-0 technical fall over Colin Honderd of Cornell. Wynsma went on to pin Nick Fetzner of UW-La Crosse (1:16) before winning the championship bout by pinfall against Nic Jarvis of Cornell (3:45).
No. 5 nationally ranked Rinehart at 285 pounds was the second Pioneer to take first place. Rinehart opened the day with a quick win by pinfall over Scott Klemme of Cornell (1:21). The second bout of the day for Rinehart went to tie breaker one and the Pioneer defeated Brody Tupy of Loras by a 9-2 decision. In the championship match, Rinehart secured the win by a 3-1 decision over Wyatt Wriedt of Loras.
Junior Luke Pradel at 133 pounds also advanced to the championship round. Pradel pinned Keegan Schultschik of Cornell (4:57) to open the day. The Pioneer next defeated Stephen Fox of the University of the Ozarks by an 11-6 decision before defeating teammate Caleb Radtke by a 6-2 decision to advance to the championship match. Pradel took home second place after Josh Stenger of UW-La Crosse won by a 7-2 decision.
Junior Chase Katzenmeyer at 141 pounds was the next Pioneer to advance to the championship match. Katzenmeyer defeated Zach McCain in the Pioneer's first bout by a 7-3 decision before defeating Zachary Weiler of UW-La Crosse by a 7-2 decision. The Pioneer took down another UW-La Crosse wrestler in the next bout by a 4-2 decision before Katzenmeyer finished second by a 6-0 decision to UW-La Crosse's Hayden Schlough.
The final Pioneer to take second at Cornell was junior Max Schmitz at 197 pounds. Schmitz started the day with a win by pinfall (4:09) over Montre Blade of UW-La Crosse. The Pioneer's next bout finished early with a 16-0 technical fall over Kyle Reitmeier of Lakeland. Schmitz went on to defeat Cannon Kelly of Augustana by a 6-2 decision and Kendale McCoy of Cornell by a 5-3 decision to advance to the championship bout. Schmitz finished in second place to Isaac Lahr of UW-La Crosse who pinned Schmitz (6:35).
