Pioneers open season with win in Throwdown in the Theatre

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – UW-Platteville won five straight matches and pulled away from visiting Cornell College to defeat the Rams 23-19 Saturday night in the Throwdown in the Theatre on the Brodbeck Concert Hall stage.

The Pioneers won the first five matches of the night which started with Zach Coffeen's 18-10 major decision over Kendale McCoy at 197 pounds.  Lucius Rinehart defeated Chris Lyons in the heavy weight match in an 11-7 decision followed by Issac Wiegel taking the 125 pound match with a 4-1 victory over Brody Lamb.  Leading 10-0, Scott Arneson pinned Devin Stortz in 4:27 at 133 pounds and was then followed by Chase Katzenmeyer's winning decision at 141 pounds to extend the Pioneers' lead to 19-0.

The Rams made a comeback in the next three matches with the 157 and 165 classes ending in back-to-back pins to lessen the Pioneers' lead to 19-15.  Grant Wedepohl sealed the fate of the night with an 8-0 major decision over Nic Jarvis at 174 pounds. Cornell's Max Schmitz won by major decision in the final match of the night 12-2 and brought the final score to 23-19. 

The Pioneers begin the 2018 season 1-0 in duals while the Rams fall to 1-1 for the season. The Pioneers will return to action next Saturday back in Platteville at the Super 8 Invitational in Williams Fieldhouse.
