Pioneer wrestlers competitive against DI opponents

he University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team competed at the Pat Flanagan Open at Loras College on Saturday in Dubuque, Iowa. A number of Division I teams throughout the Midwest sent wrestlers to compete, including the University of Iowa, UW-Madison, Purdue University, the University of Northern Iowa and Northern Illinois University.

Pioneer wrestlers competitive against DI opponents

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. —The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team competed at the Pat Flanagan Open at Loras College on Saturday in Dubuque, Iowa. A number of Division I teams throughout the Midwest sent wrestlers to compete, including the University of Iowa, UW-Madison, Purdue University, the University of Northern Iowa and Northern Illinois University.

No Pioneers finished out on top, but definitely made an impact, finishing in the top of their respective brackets.

In the 125-weight class, senior Cole Ferguson made it to the third place match, facing Luke Schroeder of Purdue, where he finished fourth in the tournament.

Not far behind in the 125-weight class was junior Zach Stenger, who made it to the fifth place match and finished sixth overall on the day.

Freshman Pioneer Scott Arneson made it to the fifth place round, where he won by forfeit over Iowa wrestler Brody Gruthus, finishing fifth in the 141-weight class bracket.

Senior Mason Bohm climbed his way up the ladder in the 149-weight class, finishing second in his bracket after losing a close 5-1 match to Iowa wrestler Jaden Glosser.

In the 197-weight class, senior Bryant Etherton pinned his opponent from Loras in the beginning of the second round of the fifth place match, taking fifth place overall on Saturday.

When it came time for the heavyweight class, freshman D'Andre Johnson fought his way to a second place finish, defeating Loras and unattached Wisconsin wrestlers along the way.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 at UW-La Crosse at 1 p.m.
