Pioneers take on top Midwest wrestlers at CUW Open
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team competed against some of the Midwest’s elite wrestlers at the 23rd annual Concordia University Wisconsin Open on Saturday in Mequon, Wis.
MEQUON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team competed against some of the Midwest's elite wrestlers at the 23rd annual Concordia University Wisconsin Open on Saturday in Mequon, Wis.
Sophomore Kody Azarian fought his way through six rounds to finish third in the 133-weight class, including a major decision win in the first round and defeating Pernevellon Sheppard of UW-Parkside 14-13 in the third place match.
In the 149-weight class, freshman Kyle Benjamin and junior Greg Osborn both made it through five rounds, scoring 3.5 and 6.5 team points for the Pioneers, respectively. Benjamin dominated his third round, winning with a tech fall over Tristan Zabinski of Concordia 15-0. Osborn also wrestled well for the Pioneers, pinning Daniel Carrillo from Elmhurst College in the second round.
Freshman D'Andre Johnson scored four team points for the Pioneers in the heavyweight class, including a pin over Ramon Correa of Muskegon in the first round and winning two more rounds to give him a 3-2 record for the tournament.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis. at 9 a.m.
