Pioneer Grapplers take third at MSOE Invite
Cole Ferguson took first at the MSOE Invitational as the UW-Platteville wrestling team placed third out of 10 teams on Saturday.
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Cole Ferguson took first at the MSOE Invitational as the University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team placed third out of 10 teams on Saturday.
The Pioneers totaled nine place winners, which included four top-three finishes. UW-Platteville recorded 77.5 team points, while Central won the event with 148 points and Concordia was runner-up with 107.5 points.
Ferguson began his day with an 11-0 major decision then defeated Wheaton's Fuentez 8-4 in the semifinals. He beat sixth-ranked Daniel Page from Central, 3-1, to claim the 125-pound title.
Mason Bohm tallied a pair of pins to advance to the semifinals at 149-pounds. He then recorded a 14-5 major decision over Hannibal LaGrange's Tyler Sonnabend to go to the championship bout. Bohm fell to Central's Ryan Vandall, 8-3, in the championship bout to finish runner-up.
Dylan DeShane didn't start his day off on the right foot, falling to UW-Oshkosh's Korey Kleinhans, 10-4. DeShane bounced back and pinned MSOE's Pat Alcock in the wrestle back bracket. He then pinned Khail Jamison from Hannibal-LaGrange, before beating teammate Michael Cole 5-0 to advance to the third-place bout. DeShane squeaked out a 4-2 victory over Lakeland's Eddie Terres to claim third-place at 184 pounds.
Freshman Josh Cannon opened the day with an 8-3 win over MSOE's Devin Mahnke at 197 pounds. Cannon was pinned by Concordia's Jake Reuteler in the semifinals, but beat St. Olaf's Sam Kuss 8-4 to advance to the third-place bout. He then defeated Mahnke again, this time 9-4, to take home third-place.
The Pioneers return to conference action on Friday, Dec. 12 at UW-Stevens Point. The dual is set to start at 7 p.m.
