Pioneers Fall Short to UW-La Crosse, 58-46
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team dropped a 58-46 decision to WIAC member, UW-La Crosse on Wednesday night at Bo Ryan Court.
The Pioneers (6-8, 2-3 WIAC) were led by McKenzie Forseth and Liz Lawinger, who scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Eagles (10-3, 3-1 WIAC) got a game-high 14 points from Rachael Salata and Kassie Robinson added 10 in the win.
Forseth scored five-straight points, late in the first half, to put the Pioneers up 23-22 with 6:00 to play in the opening stanza. The
Eagles came back to close out the half with a 9-2 spurt for a 31-25 halftime lead. At the break, the two had each shot 41.9% from the field but the difference was that the visitors had made 5 of 6 free throws compared to a 0 for 2 effort by the Pioneers.
Twice in the second half the Pioneers cut the UW-La Crosse lead to three points, including when Forseth hit a jumper with 13:49 to play as the basket cut the lead to 37-34.
The Eagles answered the surge by UW-Platteville, later in the half, with eight-straight points that put the lead to double digits for the remainder of the game. During the surge, UW-La Crosse kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard for nearly seven minutes for the win.
Next, the Pioneers will look to snap its brief two-game losing streak when they travel to UW-Superior on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m.
