Pioneers Lose in Championship Game of 2011 Redlands Winter Classic, 58-51
Sophomore Kim Wellnitz scored a team-high 15 points off the bench in a 58-51 loss by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team to host University of Redlands on Friday afternoon in the final game of the 2011 Redlands Winter Classic.
The Pioneers (6-7) went on an 18-3 run in the second half to take an eight point lead, 42-34, with 8:26 to play. However, the host Bulldogs answered the run with a 12-2 run themselves to take a 46-44 lead on a 3-pointer by Courtney Carroll.
Redlands remained in front for the rest of the contest as UW-Platteville cut the deficit to as little as two on a pair of occasions down the stretch.
Redlands (6-4) was led by Carroll, who had a game-high 20 points en route to tournament MVP honors. She also had a game-high 12 rebounds to record a double double and was joined in double figures by Brittany Oster and Ashley Sevilla, who each had 14 points in the win.
UW-Platteville junior Ashley Henry had her second-strong tournament game and another near double double performance with seven points and nine rebounds. She was the Pioneers' selection on the all-tournament team. The Pioneers' Liz Lawinger had six points and five steals in the loss.
Next, the Pioneers return to the rigors of the WIAC on Wednesday, January 4th when they host UW-La Crosse at 5:30 p.m. at Bo Ryan Court.
