University of Wisconsin-Whitewater scored the first nine points of the game and shot 50% from the field en route to a 62-48 win over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team on Wednesday night at Kachel Gym in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
The Pioneers (8-15, 4-10 WIAC) were led by freshman Alyssa Krajco, who had a team-best 10 points and five rebounds in the loss.
The Warhawks (17-5, 9-4 WIAC) were led by the 17-point effort from Courtney KUmerow, who was 7-for-7 from the field in the win. Teammate Chantel Burg had six points and a game-high 10 rebounds to lead UW-Whitewater.
Despite the early 9-0 deficit, UW-Platteville rallied to cut the deficit to three when Rachel Cropp hit a 3-pointer with 14:41 to go in the first half. The 3-pointer by Cropp cut the deficit to 12-8 but the Warhawks answered the spurt by the Pioneers with six of the next eight points. UW-Whitewater closed out the first half shooting at a 58.3% clip from the field.
To start the second half, the Pioneers' Claire Poad made a jumper to cut the deficit to single digits, 34-26, with 19:19 to play. However, a 13-2 run by the home team ended the chances for a comeback by the Pioneers.
The Pioneers still control their fate for a possible berth in the upcoming WIAC Tournament and will face UW-La Crosse on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Eagles defeated the Pioneers, 56-48, on January 4th in Platteville.
