Track Teams to host Alumni Meet



The men's and women's track and field teams will have their first competition of the season this Saturday, December 2, at home. The meet will feature the UW-Platteville track and field teams, Loras College, and several UW-P alumni. Running and field events will both begin at noon.

The men's team is looking to have a rebuilding season after losing several All-Americans from last year. Returning All-Americans are senior middle distance runner Justin Wells, senior thrower Dave Hahn, junior sprinter Adam Sanders, and junior thrower Dan Kuehn. Wells, an All-American in the 1500 meter run, is looking to have another stellar track season after being an All-American in cross country this past spring. Hahn, a two-time track and field All-American, leads a strong group of throwers that includes shot put All-American Dan Kuehn plus another shot put national qualifier in Andy Paulsen. The throwing squad looks to lead the team again this year.

Junior All-American Adam Sanders leads an experienced group of sprinters, which also includes junior Michael Peplinski, who qualified for nationals in the 4x400 last season, and sophomores Steve Ross and Ryan Blank.

The jumping crew will be lead by juniors Mike Gratz and Adam Teunissen. Gratz, the team captain, is a national qualifier and conference champion in the high jump while Teunissen was an NCAA provisional qualifier in the pole vault last season.

The UWP women's track and field will be lead by senior Bobbi Erickson and junior Julie Korish. Last season, Erickson qualified for both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships in the Weight Throw and Hammer Throw, respectively, while Korish qualified for the outdoor NCAA meet in the triple jump.

4 Pioneers earn all-America honors



Four UW-Platteville track and field athletes earned all-America status at the NCAA Division III national championships at North Central College in Naperville, Ill. Thursday through Saturday.

Two of the all-Americans broke school records during the meet . Justin Wells (Jr., Waterloo, Wis.) took fifth place in the 1,500-meter run, finishing the race in a school-record 3:53.78. Jen Hawk (Sr., Sterling, Ill.) placed fifth in the heptathlon with a UWP-record 4464 points. Both of them broke their own school marks.

Dan Kuehn (So., Waunakee) was seventh in the shot put at 52-5 to earn all-America honors, as did David Hahn (Jr., Elkhorn), who was seventh in the hammer with a toss of 178-6.

Julie Korish (So., Cashton) and Bobbi Erickson (Jr., Wisconsin Rapids) competed in the triple jump and hammer throws, respectively, Saturday, but neither qualified for the finals.

6 Pioneers head to nationals



UW-Platteville will be well represented at the NCAA Division III track and field national championships Thursday through Saturday at North Central College, Naperville, Ill.

Three men and three women will compete at the national meet, led by Dan Kuehn (So., Waunakee), who has the second-best shot put throw in the nation this spring at 56-feet-3 1/4. He will be joined by Justin Wells (Jr., Waterloo, Wis.), eighth in the 1,500 at 3:53.2, and Dave Hahn (Jr., Elkhorn, Wis.), 14th in the hammer throw at 179-9.

On the womenıs side, Bobbi Erickson (Jr., Wisconsin Rapids) has the best preliminary placing, sixth in the hammer throw at 164 feet. Joining her are Pioneer teammates Jen Hawk (Sr., Sterling, Ill.), 14th in the heptathlon with 4,247 points, and Julie Korish (So., Cashton), 17th in the triple jump at 37-6.

The top eight place winners in each event earn all-America status.

Wells, Erickson Hawk are conference champions



UW-Platteville finished fourth in the men's competition and seventh in the women's at the Wisconsin Intecollegiate Athletic Conference championships Friday and Saturday at UW-Superior.

UW-La Crosse won both titles, with the Eagle men earning 214 points, and the women 249. The Pioneers scored 86.5 in the men's race, and 38 in the women's.

Three Pioneers won conference championships. Bobbi Erickson won the hammer throw in a school-record toss of 158-5. That also automatically qualified her for the NCAA Division III championships. Jen Hawk just missed automatically qualifying. She won the heptathlon with 4,247 points, three shy of receiving an automatic bid but she is almost assured of receiving a bid. Justin Wells won the 1,500-meter run in 3:57.21.

Dave Hahn earned all-conference second team honors in two events. He was second in the hammer throw in 179-5 and in the discus at 160-0. Both of those provisonally qualified him for nationals.

Other Pioneers who provisionally qualified were Dan Kuen (51-11.25) and Andy Paulsen (51-7.25) in the shot put.

The UWP 4x400 relay team also placed second in 3:22.15 to highlight the Pioneers' efforts.

Wells earns WIAC athlete of the week



Two UW-Platteville student-athletes were named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players of the week for their record-breaking performances in their respective sports.

Becky Ahlbrecht led UW-Platteville to five wins in six games last week, including a doubleheader sweep of WIAC West Division champion UW-La Crosse and second place in the eight-team Warhawk Invitational. Ahlbrecht hit .636 in the six games, going 14x22 with two doubles, two stolen bases, three RBIs, one walk and one sacrifice. The junior from New Richmond, Wis. broke the school single-season record for hits with 60 and is on pace to demolish the season record for batting average (she is currently at .469, a full .050 ahead of the current record). She also is on pace to break the mark for runs (her 30 is seven shy of tying the record).

Justin Wells won the 1,500-meter run at the Loras Open Saturday in a time of 3:54.01, which is an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time. The junior from Waterloo broke the nine-year-old UW-Platteville record in that event by 1.69 seconds.

Both Ahlbrecht and Wells will lead their respective teams into WIAC Championships Friday and Saturday. The track and field teams compete at UW-Superior, while the softball team plays in the league tournament at UW-Oshkosh. The softball pairings will be announced late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Track team takes five firsts at Loras



UW-Platteville's track and field teams won five events at the 2000 Loras Open Saturday in Dubuque.

Brooke Bausch was a double winner for the Pioneers, crossing the finish line first in the 400 meters in 59.4 (manually timed) and joining Jen Hawk, Cassy Carey and Julie Korish to win the 4x400 relay in 4:04.89.

Bobbi Erickson took first in the hammer throw with a best toss of 145-7.

The Pioneer men were led by Dan Kuehn, who won the shot put in 50-6, and Justin Wells, who provisionally qualified for the NCAA national championships in the 1,500 with a winning time of 3:54.01. His time was also a new school record.

No team scores were kept in the meets.

Erickson earns WIAC honors



UW-Platteville's Bobbi Erickson earned the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Atheltic Conference Field Athlete of the Week award for her performance at the U.S. Collegiate Series Meet at Carthage College Saturday.

The junior from Wisconsin Rapids (Lincoln High School) provisionally qualified for the NCAA III national meet in the hammer throw at 45.04 meters (147' 9"), placing second at the Carthage Invitational. She also took sixth in the javelin and seventh in the discus.

The Pioneers are back in action Wednesday at the University of Dubuque.

Men win US Collegiate Series Track and Field Meet



The UW-Platteville men's track and field team won its second meet of the year, capturing the four-team Carthage USTCA series meet Saturday. The team scored 154 points to edge out rival Loras College, who placed second with 150 points. In the women's meet, Carthage won the meet with 205 points and the UW-Platteville was fourth of four teams with 86 points.

Just as was the story in previous meets, the throwing team led the way for the men's team. Even with the absense of All-American Dave Hahn, the Pioneers placed first, second and and third in the Discus Throw and the Hammer Throw. The threesome of Andy Paulsen, Darrel Markham and Dan Kuehn took the top three places in the Discus and then Markham, Kuehn and Jay Ryun went 1-2-3 in the Hammer.

Sophomore Adam Sanders led the running squad with a first place finish in the 200 meter dash. Sanders' winning time of 22.26 is near the school record of 22.18, set by football star Brunson Parish in 1994. Sanders also placed second in the 400 meter dash in a personal-best time of 50.21 seconds.

Junior standout Justin Wells showed his kick in winning the 1500 meter run after letting other athletes set the pace early on. Other winners for the men's team were freshmen hurdlers Ryan Blank and Steve Ross. Blank won the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.54 seconds while Ross won the 400 hurdles in his first attempt at the event.

Other athletes from the men's team to place in the top three at the meet were freshman Adam Christnovich in the 800 meter run, junior Brian McIntyre in the 5000 meter run, junior Mike Heling in the 3000 steeplechase, and sophomore Mike Gratz in the high jump.

The women's team falied to win an event at the meet, but junior Bobbi Erickson provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the Hammer Throw with a toss of 147 feet 9 and 1/4 inches to place second at the meet. Other second place finishers were sophomores Brooke Bausch, Amy Whitman and Julie Korish. Bausch placed second in the 400 meter dash, while Whitman took second in the high jump and Korish placed second in the long jump.

Next up for the Pioneers is the Moco Mercer Invite to be held Wednesday, April 19 at the University of Dubuque.

Track and Field teams compete at Central Invite



Both the men's and women's track and field teams fared well over the snowy weekend at the Central Invitational in Pella, IA. The men's team tied for second place overall out of 15 teams and the women placed fourth of 15.

Junior Justin Wells was a star for the men's team, placing first in the 800 meter run and second in the 1500 meter run. In both races, Wells and Jon Lindaman from Central College fought each other right to the finish line, with Wells beating Lindaman by less than 3/10 of a second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.35, and Lindaman leaning him out by .01 in the 1500. Wells' time in the 1500 was a personal best of 3:57.08.

Another star of the men's team was junior Dave Hahn, who provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw with a toss of 171 feet 8 inches, which was more than 4 feet than Hahn's previous personal best throw in the event. Other throwers that competed well were sophomores Andy Paulsen and Dan Kuehn. Paulsen placed second in the discus and third in the shot put while Kuehn placed third in the discus.

Other top finishers for the men's team were junior Brian McIntyre, first in the 10,000 meter run; sophomore Mike Gratz, second in the high jump; sophomore Adam Teunissen, tied for second in the pole vault; freshman Joe Marks, third in the 3000 steeplechase; and the 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Adam Sanders, freshman Steve Ross, and seniors Doug Maughan and Ryan Zellner.

For the women's team, junior Bobbi Erickson and freshman Kerri Schoessow each won their respective events. Erickson won the hammer throw with 135 feet, 7 inches while Schoessow got her first college victory in the pole vault with a height of 8 feet 1 inch.

Sophomores Brooke Bausch and Julie Korish each placed second in their individual events and ran legs on the second place 4x400 relay team. Bausch ran the 400 in 61.36 seconds and Korish triple jumped 35 feet, 4 3/4 inches. The two then teamed up with freshman Cassi Carey and senior Jen Hawk to shatter the school record in the relay by more than four seconds with a time of 4:04.99.

Up next for the Pioneers is the USTCA Series meet to be held at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis.

Platteville Teams sweep home meet



Both the men's and women's track and field teams took first place overall at the UW-Platteville Invitational held April 1. The men's won the meet by more than 100 points and the women's team won by a considerable margin also.

Leading the men's team on the day was the throwing corps. Junior Dave Hahn won the hammer throw over senior teammate Darrel Markham with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 167 feet, 4 and 1/2 inches. UWP also ruled the discus throw, with sophomores Andy Paulsen and Dan Kuehn plus Dave Hahn placing first, second, and third, respectively in the event. Another trio of Darrel Markham and freshmen Josh Kamps and Jay Ryun placed fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively in the same event. Paulsen and Kuehn also placed first and third, respectively, in the shot put. Overall, the throwers scored 97 of the team's 267.5 points.

The men's team was also strong in the sprinting events, with sophomore Adam Sanders winning the 200 meter dash and senior Ryan Zellner winning the 400 meter dash. These two later teamed up with senior Doug Maughan and freshman Michael Peplinski to win the 4x400 relay in a time of 3 minutes 21.6 seconds. Maughan also placed second in the 100 meter dash, third in the 200 meter dash, and was a member of the second place 4x100 relay team along with freshman Rob Kuehl, senior Ryan Streets and Adam Sanders. Streets also placed third in the third in the 100 meter dash and fourth in the 200 meter dash, being edged out by teammate Doug Maughan in each event.

Other champions for the men's team were junior Justin Wells in the 1500 meter run, sophomore Mike Gratz in the high jump and sophomore Adam Teunissen in the pole vault with a height of 14 feet, 6 inches. Other men's athletes placing in the top three in their events were freshman Ryan Blank, who finished second in the 110 hurdles, and junior Brian McIntyre, who placed third in the 1500 meter run.

The women's team was also led by the throwers, with senior Bobbi Erickson winning the hammer throw with a toss of 139 feet 9 1/2 inches and the javelin with a throw of 94 feet 9 1/4 inches. She also placed second in the shot put. Junior Amy Reick won the discus throw at 124 feet 7 inches in addition to placing third in the shot put and hammer throw and fourth in the javelin. Heidi Schultz placed second in the hammer throw and Denise Olson placed third in the javelin to pace the women's throwers. Overall, the women's throwers scored 87 of the team's 228 points.

Senior Jamie Bylsma was a double winner in the meet. She won the 200 meter dash and was a member of the winning 4x100 relay team along with freshman Cassi Carey and sophomores Julie Korish and Brooke Bausch. The same four also teamed up to place second in the 4x400 relay. Korish also was a winner in the long jump and placed second in the triple jump.

Another winner for the women's team was junior Erica Durtschi, who pulled away on the final lap to win the 1500 meter run. Other top three finishers for the women's team were sophomore Brooke Bausch, third in the 400 meter dash; sophomore Crystal Stietz, second in the 100 meter hurdles; and freshman Kerri Schoesson, second in the pole vault.

5 Pioneers earn all-America honors



Five UW-Platteville track and field athletes earned all-America honors at the NCAA Division III national championships this weekend at Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Ill., leading the Pioneers to 10th place in the men's team standings.

Keith Brumund-Smith (So., Dane/Waunakee) was a double honoree. He placed third in the 800-meter run in 1:52.81 and anchored the 4x400 relay team that placed fourth. Doug Maughan (Sr., Lancaster), Adam Sanders (So., Menomonee Falls), Jeremy Koehler (Sr., Green Bay/Notre Dame) and Brumund-Smith completed the relay in 3.18.65.

Dave Hahn (Jr., Elkhorn) earned all-America status in the 35-pound weight throw,with a best heave of 55-11 3/4.

Also competing for the Pioneers were Mike Gratz in the high jump, Andy Paulsen in the shot put and Bobbi Erickson in the weight throw. All missed qualifying for the final rounds.

Lincoln, Neb. won the men's championship with 59 points, while Wheaton, Mass. captured the women's title. UW-La Crosse was third in the men's race with 33 points, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 28 and UW-Platteville 10th with 12.

8 Pioneers qualify for nationals



UW-Platteville will be well represented at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Illinois Wesleyan University Friday and Saturday.

Seven men and one woman Pioneer will make the trip to Bloomington for the national championships.

For the men, Keith Brumund-Smith qualified for the 800 meter run in his first season of running the event. He will also anchor the 4x400 relay team, which includes seniors Doug Maughan and Jeremy Koehler, and sophomore Adam Sanders. Brumund-Smith's best time is ranked fifth in the 800, while the relay team is fourth, just behind UW-La Crosse, whom the Pioneers beat Saturday.

Making their first trip to the national meet are sophomores Andy Paulsen and Mike Gratz and junior Dave Hahn. Paulsen is ranked seventh in the shot put; Hahn is ranked 10th in the weight throw; and Gratz is ranked 11th in the high jump.

On the women's side, Bobbi Erickson is ranked tenth in the weight throw.

Men place fourth, women seventh at WIAC Championships



While playing host to the 2000 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, the UW-Platteville men took fourth place, their highest placing in the meet in 26 years.

UW-LaCrosse won the meet with 201 points, while the Pioneers scored 70. The women's team championship was also won by UW-LaCrosse, with the Pioneer women placing seventh overall with 34 points, only one point out of sixth and five from fifth place UW-River Falls.

The two-day event was contested before packed houses in the Pioneer Athletic Center in Williams Fieldhouse.

Sophomore Keith Brumund-Smith was a double conference winner for the men's team. After winning the 800 meter run in a new Fieldhouse record of 1:54.00, he teamed up with seniors Doug Maughan and Jeremy Koehler and sophomore Adam Sanders to easily win the 4x400 relay ahead of national power UW-LaCrosse with another fieldhouse record time. Maughan and Koehler also scored points in individual events. The senior duo placed third and fifth, respectively, in the 400-meter dash to score valuable points for the Pioneers.

Throwers Andy Paulsen, Dave Hahn and Dan Kuehn also helped out tremendously with the team's success at the meet. Paulsen exploded with a huge personal best of 52-feet-2 3/4 in the shot put to place second at the meet and qualify himself for the NCAA championships in the event. Hahn also qualified for nationals at the meet after placing third in the weight throw with a personal best distance of 55-feet-1.

The pentathlon was another big point-scoring event for the Pioneers, with sophomore Adam Teunissen, junior Greg Kroncke and sophomore Mike Gratz placing third, fourth and fifth, respectively, at the meet. Gratz also placed sixth in the high jump.

Other medal winners for the men's team were junior Justin Wells, who placed third in the 1500-meter run final, and freshman Ryan Blank, who placed sixth in the 55-hurdle final after running a personal-best time of 7.89 second in the preliminaries.

Highlighting the meet for the women was junior Bobbi Erickson, who placed second in the weight throw event with a throw of 50-feet-9 1/4. Her distance not only was a new UW-Platteville school record, but also qualfied her for the NCAA championships this upcoming weekend. Erickson also placed eighth in the shot put to round out her excellent meet.

Sophomores Amy Whitman, Brooke Bausch, Crystal Stietz and Julie Korish were the other UWP women to finish in the top eight in individual events. Whitman placed sixth in the high jump on Friday and came back on Saturday to finish fourth in the pentathlon. Bausch finished fifth in the 400 meter dash final with a time of 1:00.59 while Stietz placed sixth in the 55 low hurdle final with a time of 9.08 seconds. Korish placed seventh in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump to lead the UW-Platteville jumpers.

Pioneer men break four school records at Stevens Point Invitational



The UW-Platteville men's track and field team broke four school records and qualified several athletes for the national meet while placing fifth overall at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational last Saturday.

Junior Justin Wells won the mile run at the meet with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:15.29. His time also broke the UWP school record in the event, which had stood for 24 years.

Senior Doug Maughan and sophomore Keith Brumund-Smith also broke individual school records at the meet. Maughan ran 49.85 in the 400 meter dash, which is the fastest time a UW-Platteville athlete has ever run on a 200 meter track, eclipsing his own mark of 49.86 set last year. Brumund-Smith ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 800 meter run which also established a new school record. He finished the race nearly two seconds ahead of his nearest competitor in a time of 1:52.75. Maughan and Brumund-Smith then teamed up with freshman Michael Peplinski and senior Jeremy Koehler to automatically qualify for the national meet in the 4x400 relay. Their time of 3:18.22 won the meet and set a new school record after Brumund-Smith ran the fastest split time in school history (47.6) on anchor leg to pass two other WIAC teams.

The runners didn't have all the success at the meet though. Junior Dave Hahn improved upon his provisonal qualifying mark and put himself higher in the national rankings after winning the meet in the Weight Throw event with a mark of 54 feet 7 1/2 inches. Hahn is an extremely consistent thrower and has over ten throws on the season over the provisional qualifying standard.

The Pioneer women's team had a great day as well, with senior thrower Bobbi Erickson improving her provisional qualifying mark in the Weight Throw with a toss of 48 feet 9 inches. Bobbi and fellow teammate Sara Erickson have both provisionally qualified in the event during the season.

Another highlight for the women's team came in the final event of the meet when sophomore Julie Korish, senior Jamie Bylsma, freshman Cassi Carey, and sophomore Brooke Bausch broke their own school record in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:06.51.

Next up for the Pioneers is the WIAC conference meet to be held Friday and Saturday at William's Fieldhouse. Fan support would be greatly appreciated as UW-Platteville looks to be competitive in several events.

Four athletes provisonally qualify at home track meet



Pioneer tracksters Justin Wells, Dave Hahn, Bobbi Erickson and Sara Erickson each provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in their respective events Saturday at the UWP Invitational.

The Pioneer men took second out of 16 teams, while the women were fourth of 13 teams.

For the men's team, Wells easily won the 1500 at the meet with a time of 3:58.20 and junior Dave Hahn won the Weight Throw and placed himself higher in the national rankings with a toss of 53-10 in the Weight Throw. On the women's side, junior Bobbi Erickson and senior Sara Erickson placed third and fourth, respectively, in the Weight Throw with distances of 47-5 and 47-3 3/4.

Another standout for the Pioneer track squad was sophomore Keith Brumund-Smith, who still remains undefeated for the season in individual events. Brumund-Smith won the 800 meter run by more than two seconds and then teamed up with seniors Doug Maughan and Jeremy Koehler and freshman Michael Peplinski to win the 4x400 relay by nearly nine seconds with a time of 3:22.8. Maughan also placed second in the 400 meter dash with a season-best time of 50.10 seconds.

Other top finishes for the men's team include Justin Wells, second in the 800 meters; sophomore Dan Kuehn, third in the Shot Put; and junior Brian McIntyre, second in the 5000 meters.

The women's team had no individual winners but had second place finishes from sophomores Julie Korish, Brooke Bausch, Crystal Stietz and Amy Whitman. Korish placed second in the long jump and third in the triple jump in addition to running a leg on the third place 4x400 relay team along with Bausch plus senior Jamie Bylsma and freshman Cassy Carey. Bausch placed second in the 400 meter dash and Stietz took second in the 55 hurdles while Whitman tied for second place in the high jump.

Pioneer men win 18-team meet; Women finish second



UW-Platteville's track and field teams turned in impressive performances Saturday at the Titan Open, hosted by Illinois Wesleyan Unioversity.

The Pioneer men captured the championship in the 18-team field, scoring 102 points and easily out-distancing the hosts, who were second with 65. The UWP women fell one point short of the title in the 17-team field. NCAA Division I school Illinois State edged the Pioneers 56-55 for the team title.

The men won five titles, led by sophomore sensation Mike Gratz clearing 6-8 in the high jump to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. Gratz is now ranked in the top ten nationally in the event.

Sophomore Keith Brumund-Smith and junior Justin Wells each outsprinted McKendree's Edwin Kiprotich to win their respective events. Brumund-Smith won the 800 with a time of 1:55.28 and Wells captured the 1500 run in 4:02.09.

Freshman Steve Ross was a double winner for the Pioneers. After winning the 55 hurdle final with a time of 7.94, Ross teamed up with fellow freshman Mike Peplinski plus seniors Doug Maughan and Jeremy Koehler to win the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:23.52.

The men's throwing corps had a good day, with junior Dave Hahn and sophomores Dan Kuehn and Andy Paulsen placing first, second and third, respectively, in the weight throw.

Bobbie Erickson won the weight throw at 46-8 3/4 to pace the Pioneer women, who had several personal bests during the day. The women's 4x400 team of sophomores Julie Korish and Brooke Bausch plus freshman Cassi Carey and senior Jamie Bylsma placed second in the meet but broke the UWP school record with a time of 4:07.87.

The Pioneers will be home Saturday for the UWP Invitational.

Teunissen, Brumund-Smith break school records at Eastbay Invitational



Sophomores Adam Teunissen and Keith Brumund-Smith each broke school records over the weekend to lead the UW-Platteville men's track team to a 2nd place finish, while Sara Erickson provisionally qualified for nationals at the UW-Stevens Point Eastbay Invitational on Saturday.

Teunissen broke the school record in the Pentathlon with a score of 3159 points after setting personal bests in the first three of five events.

Brumund-Smith broke teammate Jeremy Koehler's school record in the 600 meter dash and finished more than two seconds ahead of his nearest competitor with his time of 1:21.20. Brumund-Smith also ran the fastest relay split in school history (48.2) on anchor leg of the 4x400 relay. The relay team, which also included freshman Steve Ross and seniors Doug Maughan and Jeremy Koehler, provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships with a time of 3:20.65.

Other highlights for the men's team include junior Dave Hahn and sophomore Dan Kuehn placing first and second, respectively, in the weight throw; junior Justin Wells winning the 800 meter run; sophomore Joe Marks running a smart race in the 1000 meter run to finish second; and freshman Steve Ross placing third in the finals of the 55 meter high hurdles.

For the women's team, senior Sara Erickson provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships in the weight throw with a personal best toss of 47-4 1/4.

Bausch, Erickson lead women's team to second place finish at Pointer Invite



Brooke Bausch and Sara Erickson each won individual events at the 8-team Pointer Invitational to lead UW-Platteville to a second place finish in the women's rankings. Bausch, a sophomore from Cuba City high school, won the 400 ahead of freshman teammate Cassi Carey and anchored the winning 4x400 team. Other members of the relay were sophomore Julie Korish, senior Jamie Bylsma and Cassi Carey.

Senior Sara Erickson won the Weight Throw and finished second in the Shot Put to score 18 point for the Pioneers. Her toss of 45-10 3/4 in the Weight Throw was a seasonal best for the Pioneers.

Another standout for the women's team was Julie Korish, who placed second in the triple jump and third in the long jump, and also ran leadoff on the winning 4x400 team and anchor leg on the second place 4x200 relay.

The men's team failed to win an event, but came pretty close with sophomore Adam Teunissen jumping 13-11 1/4 in the pole vault to tie the winner in height, but was awarded second place because of his greater number of misses at lower heights. Teunissen also ran a leg of the third place 4x400 team along with seniors Doug Maughan and Jeremy Koehler and junior Joakim Osthus.

The men's distance medley relay team of Ryan Zellner, Doug Maughan, Keith Brumund-Smith and Justin Wells established a new school record in the event after taking second place behind UW-Oshkosh in a time of 10:30.66. Other highlights for the men's team include sophomore Mike Gratz and junior John Gray placing second and third, respectively, in the high jump and junior Dave Hahn placing second in the weight throw.

Next up for the Pioneers is the Eastbay Invitational at UW-Stevens Point on February 4.

Pioneers win eight events at first track meet



UW-Platteville's track and field teams captured eight titles at the Pioneer Open Saturday at Williams Fieldhouse. Sophomore Keith Brumund-Smith led a 1-2-3 finish for the Pioneers in the 600 meter dash with a meet record in a time of 1:21.50. Junior Justin Wells took second place with 1:24.31 and senior Doug Maughan placed third. Wells also ran well in the 1500 meter run, placing first with a meet record of 4:00.73. Teammate Brian McIntrye placed second in the race.

John Gray and Mike Gratz each cleared 6-4 to lead the high jump, with Gray being awarded first place and Gratz second. The men's 4x400 team also took first place after a huge battle with rival Coe College. Brumund-Smith broke the race open for the Pioneers with a 48.7 third leg split and Doug Maughan was able to hold off the fast charging anchor leg for the Coe team.

Other highlights for the men's team include junior Dave Hahn provisionally qualifying in the weight throw with a toss of 52-8, sophomore Adam Teunissen winning the pole vault, sophomore Dan Kuehn placing second in the shot put, sophomore Joe Marks placing second in the 3000 meter run, and senior Jeremy Koehler placing second in the 400 meter dash.

For the women's team, sophomore Julie Korish took first place in the long jump and was edged out for first place in the triple jump by only 2 centimeters. Sara Erickson won the weight throw at 43-11 1/2 and sophomore Amy Whitman won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet 1 inch.
