La Crosse, Wis. – The Pioneers sent a small group to the UW-La Crosse Final Qualifier for a last chance to qualify to the NCAA Championships next weekend. Even though Kyle Whaley was set to qualify to the meet he used the weekend to improve his national ranking.
On the third throw of the series, Whaley threw a 17.09m (56-1) bomb. For the first time in his career he threw over seventeen meters and improved his season best by 2-feet. The mark moved him up to seventh in the Division III honor roll.
Sophomore Zach Lee was attempting to improve his ranking in the 800m but was unsuccessful. Strong winds slowed the whole field down and Lee finished sixth with a time of 1:53.95. He ended the season ranked 31st in the nation in both the 800m and 1500m distances.
Weather conditions affected all races around the oval as Devan Montgomery's third place finish of 2:15.87 did not result in a season best. She finished the season ranked 39th in the nation for the discipline.
Montgomery anchored the 4x400m later in the evening that finished third with a time of 3:50.90. Although the time was not a season best their ranking of 15th in the nation would secure their spot in the national meet. Montgomery was joined by Megan Marotz, Briana Iwans and Amber Williams.
