School Record Falls at Augustana Meet of Champions
The Pioneers came away with multiple champions and a new school record during the Augustana Meet of Champions on Friday and Saturday.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill - The Pioneers came away with multiple champions and a new school record during the Augustana Meet of Champions on Friday and Saturday.
The meet began with the women's competition on Friday afternoon. Amber Williams highlighted the day with a first place finish in the triple jump. The indoor national champion jumped a national leading mark of 40-02 (12.24m).
Fellow Pioneer Kelsey Reed took third in long jump with a 17-10.25 (5.44m) leap.
On the track, Devan Montgomery took second in the 400m with a time of 58.22. Montgomery's time is the second fastest time in the WIAC this season.
Megan Marotz competed Friday and Saturday to finish third in the Heptathlon. Marotz competed in the 100m hurdles, shot put, high jump, 200m, long jump, javelin, and 800m to score a total of 3808 points
The men's competition occurred on Saturday and was highlighted by a new school record. Matt Dwyer won the pole vault with a school record clearance of 16-2.75 (4.95m). With the new mark, Dwyer is currently tied for eighth on the national list.
Adam Lange charged ahead in the 800m taking the lead at the halfway point and held off a challenge for the win. Lange crossed the finish in 1:54.82, one hundredth of a second ahead of second place.
Dan Arnold continued his unbeaten streak in the 110 hurdles. Arnold ran 14.30 before returning with a 14.36 in the finals.
The foursome of Zach Lee, Ben Nemec, Mark Schmitz and Nolan Wallenkamp were victorious in the 4 x 800m relay. The Pioneer foursome finished three seconds ahead of Augustana's squad with a time of 8:04.39.
Matt Brendemihl came away victorious in the triple jump. Brendemihl bested this year's indoor national runner-up in the event, Jerry Williams from UW-Stevens Point, by 5 inches. Brendemihl jumped a season best mark of 47-00.25 (14.33m).
The Pioneers will split their squads next week taking members to the Drake Relays, Gina Relays and UW-Whitewater. Next week will conclude the end of the regular season for the Pioneers before the WIAC Championships on May 6th and 7th at UW-Whitewater.
