Track and Field teams come away with wins at Ashton May Invite
The UW-Platteville Track and Field teams competed at the Ashton May Invitational on Saturday at UW-La Crosse. The 16 team invitational was held on a sunny but chilly day that saw temperatures stay in the 30s for most of the competition. The women came away with an 8th place finish while the men finished 3rd. Host UW-La Crosse won the women’s competition while Augustana pulled away with the men’s top spot.
LA CROSSE, Wis. - The UW-Platteville Track and Field teams competed at the Ashton May Invitational on Saturday at UW-La Crosse. The 16 team invitational was held on a sunny but chilly day that saw temperatures stay in the 30s for most of the competition. The women came away with an 8th place finish while the men finished 3rd. Host UW-La Crosse won the women's competition while Augustana pulled away with the men's top spot.
On the women's side, the Pioneers saw Amber Williams contributing points in three different events. In the 100 meter hurdles Williams ran a personal best of 15.09 for a 3rd place finish. Williams also the lead off leg of the 4x400 meter relay that came away with the win. Williams handed off to Bri Iwans who passed on the baton to Amanda Milne. Devan Montgomery anchored the relay to a first place finish in a time of 4:01.61.
In the field events Williams went into the Triple Jump finals in second place behind UW-La Crosse's Bria Halama, the defending NCAA Outdoor Triple Jump National Champion. Williams jumped 11.92m (39-01.25) on her 5th attempt to take the lead from Halama and claim the win.
In the long jump, the Pioneer's Kelsey Reed was able to claim the win with her first jump of the day. Reed started the competition with a personal best 5.30m (17-4.75) jump and led from start to finish.
On the men's side, Dan Arnold's season debut in 110 hurdles resulted in a win. Arnold rolled over the finished line with a time of 14.44.
The Pioneers 4 x 100 meter relay saw a second place finish in their season debut. Mitch Dowell led off to Nick Stugelmeyer who handed off to Brandon Navin. Trevor Whitehead anchored the relay to a 42.76 finish. Dowell, Navin and Whitehead return as members of last year's national qualifying relay.
In the field events, Matt Dwyer was able to claim the win in the pole vault. Dwyer cleared 4.85m (15-11) on his first attempt.
The Pioneers were also able to claim the win in the Triple Jump. Matt Brendemihl lept 14.04m (46-00.75) on his first finals jump to claim the win.
The Pioneers continued their season at home with the Hammer and 5K competitions Friday night on April 15.
