Men finish second, women fifth, at Wartburg Indoor Select
WAVERLY, Iowa -- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women’s track team finished in fifth place, while the men finished second overall on Friday and Saturday at the Wartburg Indoor Select in Waverly, Iowa.

WAVERLY, Iowa -- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's track team finished in fifth place, while the men finished second overall on Friday and Saturday at the Wartburg Indoor Select in Waverly, Iowa.
Women
Taking first for the Pioneers in the 5,000 meter run was Chelsey Heiden with a time of 18:44.65.
The women performed well in the high jump as Alyssa Iserman took first with a leap of 1.63 meters while Caitlin Thomson took third after clearing 1.58 meters.
Thomson also contributed to the teams' points with a second place finish in the indoor pentathlon after accumulating a total of 3,138 points, participating in the 800-meter run, 60-meter hurdles, high jump, long jump and shot put.
Men
Starting off strong in the 60-meter dash were a second and third place by Caleb Mertens and Mitchell Dowell with times of 7.06 and 7.13 respectively.
Mertens continued his success in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.56 seconds, good enough for first place. Brandon Navin was close behind with a time of 22.86, good enough for third place.
Darren Hudziak took first in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:23.29, while teammate Joel Walden took third with a time of 1:23.69.
Matt Wubben led the pack in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:34.92 and a first place finish.
In the high jump Jacob Earle took third with a leap of 1.83 meters.
The Pioneers swept the top three spots in the pole vault as Garrett Riggs and Matt Dwyer cleared 4.7 meters, but Riggs received first for attempting less jumps. Malachi Romportl took third after clearing a height of 4.55 meters.
Alex Niehaus took third in the long jump after jumping 6.31 meters.
With a leap of 13.22 meters Darrell Simms took first place in the triple jump.
Kyle Whaley competed in the weight throw and tossed a distance of 15.78 meters, which earned him third place.
The Pioneer men's team accumulated 137 points to earn second place overall at the meet, 60 points shy of first.
The men's and women's team returns home for the next meet at the UW-Platteville Invite on Feb. 14.
