11-game losing streak snapped

Dubuque, Iowa – The Pioneer softball team snapped an 11-game losing streak on Monday with a win, 6-5, as well as a loss, 4-3, to the University of Dubuque in a doubleheader at the Dubuque baseball field.

UW-Platteville got off to a great start in the first game, scoring three runs in the first three innings, but that would be the end of their offensive production for the remainder of the game. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, the Spartans were able to rally in the sixth inning for four runs after not scoring the previous five innings. After being stifled in the seventh, the Pioneers dropped the first game, 4-3.

First baseman, Haley Salazar led the Pioneers at the plate going 2-3 with one run and an RBI. Katie Huss doubled to right field in the top of the second inning to drive in two RBIs for her only hit of the day.

Crystal Rote led things off for the Pioneers with a single home run in the top of the second inning, 1-1. Lisa Karau drove the ball deep to left-center for the first run of the third inning. Carley Rote followed with a sac fly to center, bringing in MJ Patten for her only RBI of the day. The Spartans were able to answer only one point in the bottom of the third, 3-2. Following a scoreless fourth, the Spartans tacked on two more runs in the fifth, 4-3.

With Huss on first and designated runner, Bayer on second, Patten sent a long ball to left-center for a two-run RBI triple. Karau followed up with a double to center field to bringing Patten in for the Pioneers' final score. Giving up only a one-run homer in the final inning, Jordan Schimke earned the save pitching the last two innings, while Rachel Romps earned her second win of the year with a 6-5 victory over the Spartans.

The women travel to Coe College on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. and a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Daniels Park in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
