Pioneers Fall In Penalty Kicks To Sea Gulls
SALISBURY, Md. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men’s soccer played Salisbury to a 0-0 draw in the opening round of the Coast-to-Coast Tournament on Thursday afternoon, but the Pioneers dropped the match in penalties, 7-6.

SALISBURY, Md. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer played Salisbury to a 0-0 draw in the opening round of the Coast-to-Coast Tournament on Thursday afternoon, but the Pioneers dropped the match in penalties, 7-6.
The Sea Gulls had several scoring chances in the early portions of the first half, firing three shots on goal, but Pioneer freshman goalkeeper Seth Aiken made saves on each attempt. Sophomore Konrad Ziaja and senior Brant Mueller each had shots on goal for UW-Platteville in the first half, but the game remained scoreless at the break. The Pioneers dominated the scoring opportunities in the second half, attempting seven shots and three on goal compared to none for Salisbury. The Sea Gulls defense remained strong, and the game went to overtime with the score even at zero. UW-Platteville outshot Salisbury 6-1 in the two overtime periods but couldn't break through and the match headed to penalty kicks.
Both team converted on their first three penalty attempts before the Sea Gulls stopped the Pioneers fourth attempt. Sophomore Chase Werner made a save on the Salisbury fifth penalty shot to extend the game, and sophomore Clayton Mobile found the net on his attempt to send the match to a sixth round. The Sea Gulls made the next three attempts and then stopped the shot of Mueller in the eighth round to win.
UW-Platteville outshot Salisbury 17-5 over the course of the match, including 6-4 in shots on goal. Ziaja, junior Jack Gentilli, and sophomore Lucas Godon tied for the team lead with three shots. Aiken stopped four shots in 110 minutes in goal before giving way to Werner for the penalty period.
