Pioneers draw with Wartburg to extend unbeaten streak to seven

The battle saw 34 fouls between the teams and nine yellow cards with two leading to a red card which left the Knights down a man with one minute remaining in the first overtime.
The Pioneers who currently rank third in the nation for shots per game continued their offensive power tallying 26 shots with six on goal throughout the 110 minutes. Wartburg added 15 shots of their own with 10 on goal.
Wartburg held a narrow 6-5 advantage on shots in the first half and the teams took a 0-0 tie into the second half. UW-Platteville jumped ahead with the 1-0 lead in the 68th minute when freshman John Bochenczak scored with an assist from freshman Quincy Ott.
The Pioneers held on to the 1-0 lead, but a handball in the box during the 84th minute allowed the Knights to capitalize and even the score with a successful penalty kick.
The 1-1 knot went into overtime and the Pioneers were able to gain the advantage when Wartburg's Michael Dunn recorded his second yellow card of the evening with a minute to go in the first overtime, but the Pioneers were unable to capitalize before the 1-1 draw became final.
Freshman Chase Werner recorded eight saves in the contest while counterpart Patrick McMahon tallied four saves for the Knights.
With the tie, UW-Platteville is now 5-2-2 overall while Wartburg is 2-4-2.
The Pioneers will take a break with the recent postponement of the next two scheduled games. UW-Platteville will now return to action next Wednesday, Oct. 6 when Knox College rolls into town for a 1 p.m. start.
