DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team persevered and played one person down for nearly 20 minutes to hold on to a 2-1 lead over the University of Dubuque. After Wednesday's win on Oyen Field, the Pioneers have now not lost in six games.
"That is how a team grows up in the middle of the season!" said Director of Soccer Sam Koenig. "Full family effort and just amazing to watch the mentality of our guys grind out a win on a red card."
The Pioneers (5-2-1) wasted no time jumping to and early 1-0 lead over Dubuque (3-3-1) in the 3rd minute and doubled the lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute with a goal by freshman Lucas Godon, assisted by sophomore Jack Gentilli.
UW-Platteville took the two-goal game through halftime, but the Spartans cut the lead in half almost 15 minutes into the second frame with a goal by Emil Windahl.
Holding on to the one-goal lead, the Pioneers had to adjust and play a man down following a red card on junior defender Matt Walter in the 71st minute. The Spartans accounted for all eight remaining shots taken in the game, but the Pioneers adjusted to emerge with the win.
Dubuque held a slim 8-7 advantage on shots taken prior to the red card. Overall, the Spartans finished with 17 shots to the Pioneers' seven.
Freshman Chase Werner tallied four saves as counterpart Christoffer Rastock recorded two.
The Pioneers will return to action and Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium on Tuesday, Sept 28 when they play Wartburg College at 7:30 p.m.
