PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers edged Hamline University 1-0 Saturday afternoon in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. The Pioneers' victory was secured by a successful penalty kick by UW-Platteville's Braxton Rottinghaus in the last three minutes of play.
The Pioneers outshot the Hamline Pipers 11-4 with seven on goal for UW-Platteville. The Pioneer's goalkeeper Nate Miller recorded his second win of the season with four saves for the day including an impressive save in the 48th minute against a break away attack from Hamline's Logan Weller.
As the end of the second half approached the score remained tied at 0-0 until the Pioneers were able to position themselves near Hamline's goal with three corner kicks. On the third corner kick by Brad Strobel, a Hamline foul inside the box set-up the Pioneers for a penalty kick and an opportunity to take the lead prior to time expiring. Rottinghaus lined up and drilled one into the upper left corner.
Hamline was unable to respond with the remaining two minutes and the Pioneers secured their second victory of the season after last Sunday's contest against Augsburg was cancelled due to weather while the Pioneers led 2-0 in the second half.
The Pioneers are now 2-0 for the season and return quickly to action on Sunday, Sept. 9 against Concordia University-Wisconsin at 2 p.m. in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
