PLATTEVILLE, Wis. —The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team fell to the UW-River Falls Falcons 96-88 on Saturday after a disputed last-second foul call sent the game into overtime in River Falls.
Five Pioneers logged double-digit points in the loss, including freshman Robert Duax with 20, senior Boston Johnson with 17, junior Cory Vaassen and freshman Ethan Woodrow had 16 points apiece and sophomore Matt Oestreich rounded out the pack with 12. Vaassen recorded a team-high with 11 rebounds, to complete the double–double.
After a back-and-forth first half, the score was tied at 34 heading into the second.
The Pioneers came out strong in the second half, leading the Falcons by 14 at 52-38 with 13:35 remaining in the game. After three Falcon three-pointers within one minute of each other, the margin shrunk, and the Pioneers led by only five with 12:04 left to play.
At the 9:42 mark, the momentum changed after UW-River Falls tied the game at 56 before a Johnson jumper put the Pioneers back in the lead at 58-56. From that point on, the Pioneers and Falcons went back and forth, tying six times until the Pioneers went ahead 82-80 with 18 seconds remaining in the game.
With four seconds left, a blocking foul call on Daux sent UW-River Falls to the free throw line. The Pioneers protested, but River Falls' Devin Buckley was awarded two free throws, which he sunk to force the game into overtime at 82-82.
The Falcons continued their momentum into the five-minute overtime, taking the lead and never looking back to get the 96-88 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over the Pioneers.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17 against UW-Stevens Point at Williams Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
