PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Peyton River, a senior guard for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men’s basketball team, has been named a finalist for the National Association of Basketball Coaches Allstate Good Works team, an award given to student-athletes who have shown dedication to community service and altruism in their communities.
Throughout his time at UW-Platteville, River has been actively involved with local community organizations such as Future Farmers of America, 4-H, several youth development programs such as Special Olympics, and many more. Aside from helping organize the Run with the Cops event to benefit Special Olympics, River has also volunteered to serve Thanksgiving dinners at the Senior Center, been part of the Reading with the Pioneers program at the local elementary school and has actively helped out with the Toys for Tots program. He’s also a member of the Pioneer Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
“Peyton has been a great ambassador for not only our program but also this University and community over the last three and a half years,” said UW-Platteville’s head men’s basketball coach Jeff Gard.
“Peyton has always been one of the first to step up and help others in need out. This has not been more evident than recently what he has done with our team as a senior that has been injured. Knowing that currently he cannot assist on the floor, he has found a way to make an impact with this team by giving advice, encouragement or whatever the team needs of him. He is truly a team-first individual.”
If selected, River will be invited to attend the 2016 NABC Convention and NCAA Men’s Final Four in Houston, Texas, where he would participate in a community service project to benefit the city with others chosen.
