PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- Following a red hot 10-0 lead, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team never lost the lead as the Pioneers ran off with a 79-66 victory over the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds Wednesday at Bo Ryan Court.
The Pioneers, along with the Blugolds, celebrated Coaches Against Cancer, as the coaches wore sneakers to go with their suits, raising money and awareness for the fight against cancer.
Starting the game going 7-8 from the field, the Pioneers biggest lead of the night came 10 minutes into the first half as they controlled all aspects of the game with a dominant 28-6 showing.
The Bluegolds managed to minimalize their deficit to 11 at the end of the first half, with a 40-29 margin.
Entering the second half, the Pioneers were not as consistent as they watched their 11 point lead shrink to one, 44-43, within the first six minutes.
A three-point basket by freshman Trey Sigel gave the Pioneers some breathing room, 47-43, with 13 minutes left to play.
A layup from Jake Manning, followed by another three from Sigel, gave the Pioneers a seven point lead and helped thrust the team to a 79-66 victory, not allowing the Blugolds to come within four for the remaining minutes.
Coming off a career-high 31 points, junior forward Jake Manning led the Pioneers yet again with a quiet 21 points, going 8-for-12 from the field with five rebounds.
Senior guard Jim Stocki went 4-for-6 from the field with two threes, and 6-for-7 from the free throw to total 16 points.
Junior guard Boston Johnson was the main facilitator for the Pioneers with five assists to go along with nine points and two steals.
The Pioneers will travel to UW-Stout to play the Blue Devils on Saturday Jan. 24 at 3 p.m.
