Men's Basketball fends off Titans, 52-47
UW-Platteville men’s basketball team held off the UW-Oshkosh Titans for a 52-47 victory on Wednesday night on Bo Ryan Court.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team held off the UW-Oshkosh Titans for a 52-47 victory on Wednesday night on Bo Ryan Court.
Senior Jim Stocki led the Pioneers with 13 points and six rebounds, while freshman Matt Oestreich added nine points.
Midway through the first half UW-Platteville used a 7-0 run to take a 22-14 lead with 6:44 left in the period. The Pioneers held the Titans to just 33.3 percent shooting and took a 29-21 advantage into the locker room.
In the second half, a three-pointer by Stocki and then by Wes Nemitz gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the game, 45-28, at the 11:07 mark.
The Titans called a timeout and out of the timeout UWO used a 13-1 run to cut the Pioneer lead down to five points, 46-41, with 4:00 left to play.
A layup by Oestreich stopped UWO's run and was the Pioneers first field goal in over seven minutes, 48-41.
Oshkosh managed to make it a one-possession game, but a steal and a fast break layup by Boston Johnson gave the Pioneers a 50-45 edge with 43 seconds to play.
On UW-Platteville's next possession Trevor Wittwer drained a pair of free throws to put the game away with 12 seconds left.
The Pioneers will take a break from conference play for the next three weeks, and travel to Loras on Saturday for a non-conference contest.
