#9 Pioneers edged by Eagles, 27-20

The ninth-ranked Pioneers turned the ball over four times, helping the Eagles go up 24-3 in the third quarter. During the fourth quarter rally, Sean Studer scored on a 14-yard run, Michael Pratl kicked a 19-yard field, and Tim Jansen caught an 11-yard TD pass from Cade Earl. The latter came with 2:11 remaining, but the onside kick attempt went out of bounds, and the Eagles ran out the clock.
Both teams are now 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Pioneers out-gained the Eagles 504-387 and limited the UW-L to 1-10 on third-down conversions. Two interceptions and two fumbles halted Pioneer drives, all inside Eagle territory. Turnovers stopped at drives in the end zone, the 5, the 10 and the 46.
UW-L's David Drew threw touchdown passes, including two to Nick Holcomb, one in the first quarter and one in the third. Drew also connected with Tripp Soma on a 13-yard TD with 26 seconds left in the first half for a 17-3 advantage.
Earl (193) and Jack Eddy (157) combined for 350 yards through the air for UW-Platteville. Studer ran for 94 yards and Wyatt Thompson 71 for the home team. Mark Johnson caught a team-high nine passes for the Pioneers, while Jansen (6-90), Zack Rappel (7-87) and Tyler Knigge (8-86) led in receiving yards. Drew finished with 266 passing yards, and Holcomb had seven catches for 138 yards for the Eagles.
The Pioneers play at UW-Whitewater next Saturday at 1 p.m.
