Pioneers start season 1-2
JACKSON, Miss. - The UW-Platteville baseball team began its 2019 season Friday by splitting a pair of games at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Pioneers (1-1 overall) scored three runs in the 10th inning to beat Millsaps 7-4. The team later fell 4-2 to Belhaven in front of their home fans.

JACKSON, Miss. - The UW-Platteville baseball team began its 2019 season Friday by splitting a pair of games at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Pioneers (1-1 overall) scored three runs in the 10th inning to beat Millsaps 7-4. The team later fell 4-2 to Belhaven in front of their home fans.
The Pioneers had a slow start in the win over Millsaps (1-7) and trailed 4-0 before scoring in the sixth inning. Junior catcher Collin Mormann drove in sophomore first baseman Ross Krist on an error by the Majors' second baseman. Senior shortstop Curtis Barsness scored on a passed ball in the seventh inning to get the Pioneers within two. Senior left fielder Brennan Kearney drove in two runs later in the seventh to tie the game 4-4.
Sophomore Jonathan Kelso drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th before the Pioneers scored two more runs on Major errors to push the score to 7-4
Senior Tyler Vogel took the mound for the opening game and pitched four innings and allowed one earned run and struck out five. Senior Scottie Gordon pitched 1 1/3 innings and earned the win.
Against Belhaven (3-4), the Pioneers were held hitless in the first four innings and got on the board with both of their runs in the top of the eighth inning. The Blazers four-run cushion was enough to hold off the Pioneers for a final score of 4-2.
On Saturday, the Pioneers fell to Millsaps 21-6 in eight innings. The Pioneers scored three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings but weren't able to score outside of those innings. The Pioneers had six pitchers take the mound and Millsaps sinished with 17 hits.
The Pioneers travel to Louisville, Ky. to face Spalding and Concordia Chicago on Saturday, March 2. On Sunday, the Pioneers will face Concordia Chicago to wrap up the weekend.
