PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team defeated Cornell College 6-5 in a last-chance effort in the eighth inning on Wednesday in Mount Vernon, Iowa. The Pioneers are now 13-12 on the season.

Senior George Jester III played well for the Pioneers, earning two hits including an RBI in the top of the third and a big double down the left field line in the eighth to put him in scoring position.

Cornell had control of most of the game, leading 5-1 heading into the top of the eighth inning, where the Pioneers logged four of their six total hits. With two men on base, junior Max Meitzler singled to right field, bringing in the first run of the inning for the Pioneers. The next run came on a Cornell error, taking the score to 5-3, but the Pioneers weren't done there. After scoring another run, this time when the Cornell pitcher walked in a run, the Pioneers were down one run when junior Colin DeBoer stepped up to the plate, hitting an RBI single to left field to bring in the tying run at 5-5.

With two outs in the eighth, the Pioneers' last chance was senior Tanner Galeazzi, who made it to first base on a fielder's choice, but another error by Cornell brought in the would-be winning run for the Pioneers.

After a scoreless ninth, the Pioneers took the 6-5 win.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, April 23 at UW-Stevens Point at 12 p.m.
