PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- A days rest is all the Pioneer baseball team needed to rebound after dropping three to the No. 7 Pointers as they swept the Eagles of UW-La Crosse on Tuesday at Kendall Murray Field (8-5, 3-2).
The Pioneers now have a 20-10 overall record, are 13-3 at Kendall Murray Field and are back on top of the WIAC with a conference record of 11-3.
In the first contest, the Pioneers jumped out to a 4-1 lead by the end of the third inning, but the Eagles would rally back to tie the game up by the end of the sixth, 5-5. After a scoreless seventh inning, followed by a shutout inning from junior pitcher Austin Daniels, the Pioneers loaded the bases for Colin DeBoer. With Kyle Reinhart at third, Zack Iverson was walked and then advanced to second after Casey Schroeder was hit by a pitch. DeBoer sent a deep ball to left field for a three-run double, 8-5. Senior relief pitcher Trevor Hall did a great job closing the game in the ninth as Daniels earned his fifth win of the year (3ip, 0h, 0r). DeBoer led the team with two RBIs, while going 2-3 with two runs and was walked twice. George Jester III went 2-4 with one RBI for 18 on the year and one run to make his season total 16.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead after the first, but UW-Platteville managed to bring in three runs by the end of the third, 3-1. Tanner Galeazzi earned 19 RBIs on the season with a one-run double in the bottom of the third to bring in Schroeder. Schroeder now has a team-high and WIAC third-best 30 runs on the year. Through eight innings, Ben Zwitter (1-0) only gave up five hits and two runs (one in first and eighth), while striking out five for the freshman's first win of the year, 3-2. Hall earned his fourth save of the year with one walk and one strikeout added to his resume. Deboer and Max Meitzler led the team with two hits apiece.
The Pioneers' arguably most important series of the year begins on Saturday, with the first of two doubleheaders against the No. 1 Warhawks of UW-Whitewater at Miller Stadium, beginning at 12 p.m.
