Pioneers name athletes of the week, LaMere and Williams earn WIAC honors
Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week – Cory Vaassen, Sr. (Cuba City, Wis.) Forward – Vaassen recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds in the Pioneers’ narrow 73-70 loss to UW-Stout on January 28. The senior also notched eight points and six rebounds in Wednesday’s loss at UW-Eau Claire. | |
Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week – Kassie Hansen, So. (La Crosse, Wis./Logan) Forward – Hansen’s career-day led the Pioneers to a fourth quarter 20-3 comeback run, but they came up short in an 86-84 loss at UW-Stout on January 28. The sophomore scored 14 of her career-high 18 points in the second half and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the loss. The sophomore shot 69 percent from the floor connecting on nine-of-13 shots for the week and averaged eight rebounds in a pair of WIAC contests for the Pioneers. |

Indoor Track Men’s Field Athlete of the Week – Matt Dwyer, Sr. (Palos Heights, Ill./St. Laurence) Pole Vault – Dwyer won the pole vault at the UW-Platteville Select on January 28. The senior’s vault of 4.91 m (16’, 1.25”) ranks him first in the WIAC and fifth on the NCAA Division III national list. |

Indoor Track Men’s Track Athlete of the Week – Ian LaMere, Sr. (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) 3,000 meter – LaMere won the 3,000 meter at the UW-Platteville Select on January 28. The senior’s time of 8:12.06 broke the UW-Platteville school record, previously held by Tyler Sigl, by over five seconds. That time ranks him first on the Division III national list by over nine seconds. | |
Indoor Track Women’s Field Athlete of the Week – Amber Williams, Sr. (Milwaukee, Wis./Hamilton) Triple Jump – Williams won the triple jump at the UW-Platteville Select on Saturday, January 28. Her mark of 11.74 m (38’, 6.25”) currently ranks her first in the WIAC and fourth in the NCAA Division III national list. | |
Wrestling Athlete of the Week – Jon Goetz, So. (West Bend, Wis.) 174 lbs. – Goetz went 4-1 and finished third at the nationally competitive Pete Willson Invitational at Wheaton College. The sophomore’s only loss in the event was a 5-2 setback to the defending NCAA Champion Ben Swarr of Messiah College. |
