Williams Fieldhouse Expansion Project
Tremendous progress is being made on the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Williams Fieldhouse $15.3 million expansion project.
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville held groundbreaking ceremonies for the Williams Fieldhouse expansion project on Friday, Oct. 13 as part of the 2017 Homecoming celebration.
Williams Fieldhouse will expand by 55,925 square feet with another 2,681 square feet of remodeled space to the existing facility. The project will add three multi-purpose athletic courts; Fitness Center expansion of cardiovascular, weight training and exercise areas; as well as a new athletic training room for the 16-sport Pioneer Athletic Department, lockers, showers and restrooms. In addition to increased indoor space, a new outdoor multi-sport artificial turf field with outdoor lighting will be constructed northwest of the intersection of Jay Street and Southwest Road.
"The fieldhouse expansion will benefit our entire student body, our faculty and staff and our community," said Chancellor Dennis J. Shields. "I am a strong believe in a healthy body and healthy mind concept. This facility will enhance both the body and mind."
The 2017 expansion is the third addition to the Williams Fieldhouse complex since the original building construction in 1961. The first addition was the Pioneer Athletic Center, completed in 1989. The second addition was the Pioneer Fitness Center, completed in 2010. The 2017 addition would complement the Pioneer Fitness Center, and would be constructed to the existing south and west sides of the Pioneer Fitness Center. The expansion would address space needs – university wide – related to wellness, fitness and recreation.
The university has increased by about 2,200 undergraduate students since the 1989 expansion and almost 400 since the 2010 addition. Due to increased enrollment, the new addition would offer needed court space for club sports, intramurals and open recreation to students.
The project is entirely funded by student segregated fees, as supported in the 2013 student body referendum, and has a projected budget of $15.3 million.
